The Records
Baptisms
Baptisms were obtained from the national archives in Dublin and
cover the years 1823-1838. The records are very fragmented many are in
tatters those that aren't are difficult to read. A search was made of
Heaphy
(all spellings) in the Parish of Aghavallen, Ballylongford, County Kerry.
The only Heaphy's found were in the townland of Carrig.

Tithe
The Tithe Composition Acts of 1823 levied a tax on each land tenant to be
used for the support of clergyman associated with the Established Church
(Episcopalian) of Ireland. In the tithe, the townland, acreage and tax can
be found for each individual. The tithe contains the names of land tenants
as well as landlords. The townland of Carrig has Corn. Heafy and B. Shannon (Shanahan),
27 acres, 2 roods, 18 perches. There are no other Heaphy's in the
Aghavallen Parish Tithe.

Griffith's
The Primary Valuation (also known as Griffith's
Valuation) was carried out between 1847 and 1864. There is a printed valuation
book for each barony or poor law union, showing the names of occupiers of land
and buildings, the names of persons from whom these were leased, and the amount
and value of the property held. The County Kerry valuations were published
in 1850-1851. These records are from the townlands of Carrigafoyle also
know as Carrig, and Upper Aghanagran in the parish of Aghavallen, Ballylongford. Names of interest are
Heaphy, Shanahan, Holly, McCarthy, and Dwane (Duane).

Census
The census of the population of Ireland was taken on Sunday night, 31st March
1901. This is the
earliest surviving census of population for the entire country. Though a census
was taken every ten years from 1821, those returns
were destroyed in 1922. Ages on these returns are notoriously suspect,
especially for older people whose ages are often "rounded-off' to the
nearest multiple of five or ten. The 1911 census was taken on Sunday
night, 2nd April 1911.
The 1901 census shows Morgan Heaphy as head of household, age
76. Morgan is the son of Cornelius Heaphy and Anne Shanahan.
Morgan's wife Bridget McCarthy is deceased at the time of the census.
Living on the farm with Morgan is his son John (Jack), daughter-in-law Ellen Holly and
grandchildren. Morgan's daughter, Anne Kennelly, immigrated to the US
and lived in Rawlins, Wyoming. Ellen's parents are Edmond Holly and Jane Dwane from the townland of
Upper Aghanagran. Morgan died July 15, 1904, at age 82. In the
1911 census his son John has the family
dairy farm in Carrig. Four of John and Ellen's sons immigrated to
Chicago, IL; Thomas, Michael, Daniel and Patrick.

Patrick subsequently marries Hannah Walsh, his 1st wife was Margaret Kennelly. Five of Patrick's
children immigrated to Chicago, IL; William, Daniel, Patrick, Teresa and
Michael.

This set of census records show Thomas Heaphy as head of
household, age 80. Thomas is the brother of Morgan son of
Cornelius. The wife of Thomas, Deborah Carmody is deceased at the time of
the census. Living on the farm with Thomas is his son Cornelius,
daughter-in-law Ellen McAuliffe and grandchildren. Thomas died January
23, 1904, at age 84. In the 1911 census his son
Cornelius has the family farm in Carrig. Five of Thomas and Deborah's
children immigrated to Omaha, Nebraska; Edward, Patrick, Morgan, Thomas and
Anne.
